New Family FAQs
Welcome to Julia Green!
We are so glad that you are here! You probably have lots of questions as you look ahead to starting Kindergarten in the Fall. We have compiled some of the most frequently asked questions within this document, but it is not exhaustive. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to PTO representatives and/or faculty and staff as the start of school approaches. Contact information is at the bottom of the page. We are here to help!
Q: When does school start?
A: The first day of school is Tuesday, August 20; this will be a full day of school for grades 1-4. Kindergarten students will have a half day of school on August 10th AND August 11th, dismissing at 11:30. The first full day of school for Kindergarten will be Thursday August 12th. The full MNPS calendar can be found at mnps.org, including all school holidays. A detailed calendar with school-specific events can be found at juliagreen.org.
Q: Is there a new student orientation?
A: Due to MNPS COVID-19 policies, we will not hold our traditional New Family Orientation. Instead, there will be an option drop-in from 1 PM to 5 PM on Monday, August 9th at Julia Green. You will have an opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and meet your teacher.
Q: What are the hours of the school day?
A: School starts at 8:00am and dismisses at 3:00pm. Morning drop-off begins at 7:45am.
Q: What are the attendance requirements?
A: It is important that all students attend school regularly. Please check the calendar now and plan your time off to maximize your child’s time in school. When your child does miss school please send a note and communicate with your child’s teacher.
Q: Are there extended care programs at Julia Green?
A: Yes, Julia Green Extended Care is operated by independent provider. If your family needs additional hours of childcare either before or after school, JGEC provides care from 7:15-7:45 am and 3-6pm. For more information about extended care, please contact JGEC director, Sandi Yarnall at (615) 975-6178 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: How does drop-off and pick-up work?
A: Students generally come and go three different ways: by school bus, by car or by walking.
Bus: All Metro students who attend their zoned school, and who live more than 1.25 miles from school, are eligible for school bus transportation. To find your bus route, go to: www.mnps.org/transportation. If you live within the 1.25 mile radius (the “Parental Responsibility Zone”) please contact the Julia Green Office regarding potential school bus transportation.
Car: You may drop off and pick up your child by car. More detailed information on how the lines work will be provided at orientation and the first day of school.
Walk: Families that live within walking distance may choose to walk to school.
Q: What does my child need to wear to school?
A: All students must wear standard school attire (SSA) to school. The SSA requirements at Julia Green are:
Tops (or dresses): with collar in any solid color
Bottoms: pants, shorts or skirts in khaki, black or navy
Shoes: must have closed-toe shoes for daily recess
Q: Where do I buy standard school attire?
A: You can purchase SSA from any retailer that you choose. Target, Wal-Mart, Old Navy, GAP, Lands’ End and many more retailers have a large selection of SSA clothing. Clothes do not have to branded with the Julia Green logo. If you would like to purchase clothing with the Julia Green logo (shirts, vests, pull-overs) you may do so through the Lands’ End uniform shop. Go to landsend.com, click on the “SCHOOL” tab and then click on “Find Your School.” You can search for Julia Green by entering the school name and state or using the Preferred School Number: 900129818.
Q: Is it true that students can wear non-SSA on Fridays?
A: On Fridays students are allowed to wear any Julia Green t-shirt in place of SSA tops. SSA bottoms and closed-toe shoes are still required on Fridays. Julia Green t-shirts and other gear may be purchased at the Julia Green Spirit Store, which is open at school gatherings and also online. There will also be opportunities to purchase JG t-shirts in connection with school events throughout the year (Carnival in the fall, Read-A-Thon in the winter and the Hornet Hustle in the spring).
Q: What about school supplies?
A: All students will be required to purchase school supplies before school begins in August. The school supply lists will be available on the school website. You may purchase supplies on your own or you may purchase supplies through a pre-order program called School Kidz. Order forms are available at the Julia Green office or you may visit www.shopttkits.com to place your order online by May 20, 2021 and use account #92389. If you purchase through this program all of your school supplies for the classroom will delivered directly to your child’s teacher prior to the first day of school.
Q: What else will my child need for school?
A: In addition to classroom supplies, students should have a backpack. For children that choose to bring their lunch, you may wish to have a lunch box. Most teachers also request that students bring a water bottle for use throughout the day.
Q: Speaking of lunch, how does that work?
A: All students will eat lunch daily in the cafeteria. All students benefit from the No Pay lunch grant which provides lunch at no cost to all students. Students may also bring a lunch from home. Funds can be put on your student’s account for treats in the cafeteria (example: ice cream, chips) by visiting the cafeteria, or you can send money to school with your student.
In addition, all students benefit from No Pay breakfast served daily from 7:30 to 8:00 am.
Q: May I come have lunch with my child?
A: Lunchtime visitors are currently not allowed at this time due to the MNPS COVID-19 policies.
Q: When do we find out my child’s teacher?
A: Prior to the first day of school you will receive a postcard in the mail providing you with your child’s class placement. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to predict the exact time that these letters will be mailed and a number of factors on the district level influence this timing.
Q: Can I sign up to receive Julia Green emails? How else can I get information?
A: Yes! There is a Julia Green listserv and information is pushed out through a number of different channels:
Email: Sign up for the listserv at Juliagreen.org. During the school year there is a weekly newsletter called the “Hornet News” that includes pertinent information. There are additional informational emails as needed. You do not need to wait until the fall to sign up.
Call-Outs: You will receive phone call outs from the district and Julia Green administration using the phone number you use in your registration.
