Julia Green Elementary School

Academics

Standardized Testing
Your children are assessed on a regular basis to determine whether they have learned particular topics and skills. Kindergartners will be tested using the Brigance test to determine their entry level skills. Throughout the year students will be assessed using the MIP (Math Improvement Plan). In the spring, grades 2-4 will take a state wide standardized test called TCAP. This determines how well your student and our school is doing as compared to other students and schools.

Accelerated Reader Program
The Accelerated Reader is a curriculum-based assessment tool that provides a summary and analysis of results to enable teachers to monitor both the quantity and quality of reading practice engaged in by their students. Students select a book from 3,700 titles on the Julia Green AR list.

Click on a Level to view the list most appropriate for your child. Be patient as it may take a few moments for the page to load.

Reading Recovery
This program which has been proven to be very successful at helping 1st grade students in a one-on-one environment who are having difficulty with reading skills. This helps bring all of our students up to the school’s high academic levels. (funded by Julia Green PTO)

Physical Education
Our goal is to develop fitness and mastery in games, sports, rhythmic activities and gymnastics. The program has many opportunities for individual choice and lots of fun. It contributes well-recognized benefits, including good self-image and healthy social development, to the total welfare of each child. Children attend P.E. for 1/2 hour each day, beginning with a warm-up activity requiring vigorous body movements. The lesson which follows focuses on age appropriate skill development. Children must wear sneaker or tennis shoe style shoes.

Library
Our mission is to spark a love of quality literature that will last a lifetime. The library currently has over 10,000 volumes. Many of these books are included in our Accelerated Reader program. Our average daily circulation is over 250 books per day. The library is open for check out and research from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. daily. Students participate in at least one class per week. During these classes, students will learn to become independent users of any library. Our library skills come directly from Metro’s T.I.P.S. curriculum. We will be having a book fair in November to help fund the library. Funding at $7.50 per child is also provided through Metro. Additional money is obtained through the book club project. We have many parent volunteers and are always looking for more.

Check out Julia Green Library’s new on-line catalog at www.youseemore.com/mnps  You can seach for books by title, author, subject, and keyword.  Have your kids click on Kids Catalog Web and they will meet KC. He is a robot that will assist them in their search for books. We are very excited about this new addition to our library.

Music
Children are introduced to melody, rhythm, pitch, duration, mood, tempo, harmony, style and timbre through a variety of musical experiences. They learn to sing a varied repertoire, read music from a score, listen to music analytically, and describe what they hear. Whenever possible, music from other cultures is integrated with the Social Studies from the regular classroom. The children enjoy learning to play Orff instruments (xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels with removable bars) and many other ethnic and rhythm instruments. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades will give musical performances during the year. Kindergarten and 1st grade parents will be invited to an Observation and Open House. Please come and visit the music classroom any time.

Art
The Art Curriculum requires that children have many opportunities to observe, discuss and create art, in order to develop an awareness of art in their everyday lives, and their art heritage. Each year of Julia Green’s art program builds upon the last in terms of skill and understanding. Students use adult methods and materials to create art like that of professional artists. The artwork of our students is featured in our hallways and in exhibits throughout Nashville.

Chinese
A Mandarin program has been established in our curriculum. Each child will receive two 30 minute classes a week. As the program grows, we hope early grades will receive intensive vocabulary building and upper grades will speak, read, and write relevant and meaningful dialogues.

Special Education Services

Numerous services are available through the Metro school system for students with Special Educational needs. After the need for special education has been determined, the Resource teacher works with students both individually and in small group settings. The LifeSkills teacher serves as homeroom teacher for special education students meeting a particular educational criteria. Additionally the school is served by the following specialists on a weekly or as-needed basis:

Many of these services are available before the start of kindergarten. If you have already received a diagnosis for your child, please make sure the office and your child’s homeroom teacher are aware of the criteria and have received all necessary paperwork to make sure your child receives all necessary services.

If you have not yet pursued a formal diagnosis but have concerns, please share them with your child’s teacher. Metro prescribes a very specific methodology for ascertaining a child’s potential for special education. The classroom teacher’s observations, over a period of time, are an important criteria in developing the child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

If you have any questions, please speak with your child’s teacher, call our office, or call the central office special education department.

Homework
Homework, as an extension of classroom learning, is a desirable part of the educational program since skills are mastered through practice. Assignments will vary according to grade level and subjects being taught. Homework is not optional. Parents are encouraged to help their children understand concepts, but are not expected to do their homework for them. If your child comes to school without his/her homework, he/she will be less likely to participate in the day’s discussions.

As children get older, homework levels will increase. Please make sure your child has a quiet space in which to work and that adequate time is scheduled to get schoolwork finished. Homework should be a top after-school priority, not the last item on the list after the conclusion of extra-curricular activities.

Parents, please feel free to send a note or call the school if there are questions about the purpose or procedure of homework.

Report Cards
Report cards are issued every nine weeks. At this time, our homeroom teachers identify students who achieve perfect attendance and “outstanding citizens.”
